There are several popular drugs out on the market used to treat erectile dysfunction (a.k.a. male impotence), Viagra perhaps being the most popular. Of these drugs, however, Cialis, a popular brand name for a drug called tadalafil, provides longer-lasting efficacy, giving rise to its nicknames "the weekend pill" or "the weekender".

History of Tadalafil

Tadalafil is taken orally, in pill form, to treat erectile dysfunction. It was first developed by a biotech company called ICOS, and was later developed and marketed worldwide by a joint venture of ICOS Corporation and Eli Lilly and Company under the brand name Cialis. In the United States, tadalafil has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, first becoming available in December, 2003. It was the third impotence pill after sildenafil (brand name Viagra) and vardenafil (brand name Levitra).

Just Why Cialis is Called The Weekend Pill

Cialis essentially relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to certain areas of the body. Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all do this by working as inhibitors of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). However, tadalafil stands out in pharmacological terms because of its longer half-life of 17.5 hours as compared with Viagra and Levitra, whose half-lives are between 4-5 hours. Tadalafil's longer half-life means a longer duration of action and increased efficacy. Hence, it earns the nickname of the "weekend pill."
